Why are they called trucker hats?

Trucker hats are named after their original wearers - truck drivers in the United States (as well as farmers and rural workers). Trucker hats have a foam front panel and a mesh back, making them lightweight, breathable, and ideal for a long drive. They often feature a curved bill and a snap closure at the back so that they can be adjusted.

Over time, the popularity of trucker hats grew as fans of outdoor activities such as hiking, camping, and fishing took a liking to the style. Today, trucker hats are a popular headwear choice among outdoor enthusiasts and adventurers.

How is a trucker hat different from a baseball cap?

There are a few ways in which trucker hats and baseball caps differ:

Make: A trucker hat typically has a foam front panel and a mesh back panel, while a baseball cap is made entirely of a solid fabric. The mesh back panel of a trucker hat is designed to keep the wearer cool and comfortable, while the foam front panel provides a bit of structure and support.

Style: Trucker hats typically have a higher crown than baseball caps, which can give them a more relaxed, casual look. Baseball caps have a more curved bill than trucker hats, although trucker hats sometimes feature a slight curve.

Use: Both trucker hats and baseball caps have become popular for a variety of outdoor activities. However, trucker hats were originally designed for truck drivers who needed a lightweight, breathable hat to wear while working. As a result, trucker hats are more commonly associated with outdoor adventure.

How do I clean my trucker hat?

Cleaning a trucker hat can be tricky due to the foam front panel and the mesh back panel, which can be prone to shrinking or losing shape if exposed to high heat or too much moisture. Here’s some steps to clean your trucker hat without damaging it:

  1. Gently clean any stains or dirt using a mild detergent and a soft cloth.
Tip: be gentle and avoid scrubbing too hard.
  2. Fill a basin with lukewarm water and a small amount of mild detergent.
  3. Place your trucker hat in the water and gently rub the detergent into the material.
Tip: avoid twisting or wringing the hat.
  4. Let the hat soak in the water for a few minutes, then rinse it thoroughly with cool water.
  5. Gently squeeze any excess water out of your trucker hat.
  6. Reshape it and lay it on a clean towel to air dry.
Tip: to preserve the shape, avoid using heat or exposing the hat to direct sunlight while drying.
  7. If creases or wrinkles appear on the foam-backed front panel, you can use steam to remove wrinkles. Be careful not to burn yourself if you decide to use steam!

Do trucker hats protect from the sun?

Trucker hats can provide some protection from the sun, but the level of protection can vary depending on the design and materials. The foam front panel and bill of a trucker hat will provide shade for the face but the mesh back panel of a trucker hat does not provide 100% sun protection. If you're looking for a hat to wear specifically for sun protection, you may opt for a hat with a full brim or a UPF-rated fabric. Take a look at some of our snapback hats for options.
